Statement

I’m applying for the exhibition in the year 2006. It seems attractive because I obtain my educations a couple years ago, this means in time when division between high and low culture is political instead an intellectual distinction, time of “apocalyptic view on mass culture” because intellectuals have no control, not autonomy anymore, no closed domain. Marginal culture threatens elitism. This Biennial is nonprofit but research-oriented exhibition, for me this means: “ Artist’s voice, rather than the cacophony that is the art world at large…”

My precisely professional objective is to see if artists are interested in redesigning, deconstruction this existing conception of culture and society, or that thought is nothing more than utopian ideal; are we going to change industrial society, take a political action, or the culture (and culture studies) are the only legitimate battlefield. Is this a fashionable intellectual superfishelness or a loyalty to some ideals? Although we are living in a time of capitalistic triumph, and popular culture was often seen as “capitalist” mass culture, does “culture industry”—corporations produce public consumerism? From my point of view, artists could challenge this presumption of a passive consumer, industry cannot manipulate an individuality, that is a wrong approach. Particularly interesting is this shifting focus from production to consumption, here lies a difference between high and popular culture shaped by mass societies, mass production, mass media. Pop-art was such a great commentary that broke down the line between art and everyday life – everything is widely available, not fine. This is the intrusion of commerce into field of art. This is progress, but is this the story about hidden, lonely intellectual in a zombie society? That is why it’s important to bring back old techniques like printmaking.

Statement of Artistic Process

I work in Rembrandt’s old technique in etching. This is labor of love and patient, this is my relief from the unreasonable demands posed by crazy progress, historical process. This is acid etching needle is used to draw into a wax ground applied over metal plate. The plate is submerged in a series of acid baths, each biting into the metal surface, only where unprotected by the ground. It was often biting me also. When I remove the ground, I force the ink into the etched depressions, than I wipe the surfaced and I print it. I like to use color of gold. Square root of MYSELF is MYSELF.
